Beta feedback

Thanks for trying out the Beta version of the new IEEE Spectrum website. Let us know what you like and dislike, what works for you and what doesn’t.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. auto hide the top links bar

The grey bar at the top becomes intrusive but if you made it thinner and drop away so you had more viewing space on the page, particularly on the mobile browser. Thanks,
    Andrew

    • SImpler is better

I prefer the old style. I want a simple list of stories. I'll go down the list and pick the one I like. I don't like the new "in your face" video game like style with stuff all over the place. I don't want anything moving on my screen unless I tell it to move (ie press play to see a movie). In summary, I want to be in charge of my computer.

      • Column positioning- Content too far left

Hey IEEE, just a little idea for your new layout, im (not currentlly but definatlly mostly) on 2560x1600, making it kinda annoying to have to lean+look left to be able to read the main column, please concidering centering it, or letting me chose the order of them all.

          • Right click options missing in IE

As I go through the articles on the main page, I like to open the ones I am reading in tabs, I try to right click and hit open in new tab on the new site and... no option. I like the new site, I personally wish there was a little more color gradiation in the background especially to help with separating columns but that is just a personal preference. I agree that the new site is amazing, but I just dont like the flattened look, it needs a little color gradient to make it more dynamic... not much, just…

              Michael,
Thanks for the feedback. I think the right-click issue might be specific to IE9- I also tend to open articles in separate tabs and it works in the browsers I use. I’ll have our QA person look into it across browsers.

I agree that the site is very flat. Are you thinking about a background gradient for the whole site (to replace the white)? Or maybe a subltle texture? Or are you thinking about a background that helps to subtly reinforce the columns?

I think we’ll definitely do a different treatment for the ads- you can add your vote to the issue hare: http://ieeespectrum.uservoice.com/forums/188138-beta-feedback/suggestions/3625181-make-advertisements-more-distinct-from-editorial-o

            • Cater for smaller screens

On my 1024x768 notebook screen, the first screenful of the page contains only three lines of the article text (and the bottom line is partially obscured by the horizontal scrollbar).

Please reduce the size of the header at the top, and do not force the width to be more than 1000 pixes. In the old days, web pages used to wrap to the size of the browser window; why can't we go back to those user-friendly days?

              • Related stories occupies too much screen space

When I click on an article there's too much space given to related stories. Instead of two columns you go in for just one column.

The font size used when viewing is much to large here. How about a way to configure it?

                  • move the right (blocks) column farther away from the story column

The page layout is relly crowded and it's hard to focus on one story. Give the elements a little more room and it should be easier to process all of it. When you scale the window so that you've only got one column of blocks, there's a ton of white space to each side and almost none between the columns.

                    • Sections in Topics

Good job, but I'm a little confused when I search an article of a specific Topic: e.g. in "Semiconductors" page I find all articles without apparent order. In old spectrum site there are 7 sections that can help in the research. If it is possible to put back these sections (even just links on one side of the page), maybe it could be better.
Anyway, this new site is amazing!

                      • Fix the sign in interface

I've long been registered as cannara@sbcglobal.net but the way you accept comments now does it backwards and we get into an infinite loop of your interface asking for a different name because my email is already used. Crazy! Other websites have easy comment logins and function -- IEEE can't?

And stop graying out hints like "your name" -- don't you like old engineers?

                          Alex,

We use Disqus for our commenting- like it or not, they’re pretty ubiquitous on most publication websites. I suspect there’s some problem with the way your Disqus accounts/identities are linked. Here are a couple links that may help:

                        • Use only ISO date & time formats

I am always disappointed in IEEE when I see the printed magazine cover with the date presented as "02.13". I suppose some might think it's cute/cool to be so concise, but as an engineer, I am actually embarrassed for you—a leading international engineering & research organization using the most illogical, incomplete, retro date format in existence. Shame on IEEE!

I recall when Y2K was an issue and all the IT system experts were beating it into our heads to ALWAYS show the full four-digit year, every place. The conventional US shorthand way of presenting dates as "mm/dd/yy" is totally illogical…

                            Ray,

Thanks for bringing ISO 8601 to our attention. It’s definitely an important standard. I could see how it could be useful for date/time stamps on content pages themselves.

However, there’s an important section in the link you provided:

ISO 8601 is only specifying numeric notations and does not cover dates and times where words are used in the representation. It is not intended as a replacement for language-dependent worded date notations such as “24. Dezember 2001” (German) or “February 4, 1995” (US English). "

On the website we’re currently using a European date format with a three-letter month. This allows us to cut down on visual clutter, and highlight the important information.

Take the homepage for instance. Because it defaults to a sort of the most recent content, the year is essentially irrelevant- everything you see will be from 2013. What’s important from a usability standpoint is the…

                          • Make advertisements more distinct from editorial on home page

I would prefer it if ads were set off more distinctly on the home page, maybe with a heavy colored border or something like that. As is, it's hard to tell the difference between articles and ads.

I much prefer to see more items per page than having the large images for each item. If there is a way to provide an option to reduce the size of the image for each item then I hope you do.

                                    • have background preference options

For example, there are options to change background color and font color on Samsung.com
plus I've no objection with the green aesthetics of the main site (at top)

                                      • site is much too overcrowded

It becomes really hard to focus on the text when there is so much going on on the right side. Also, I prefer it, when the main text is in the center of the screen - then I don't have to lean over.

There's also no print version and printing the page directly doesn't work out with firefox.

Perhaps it's just a matter of getting used to it, but my impression is that the new layout is a change for the worse in terms of readability

                                        • I'd like to be able to turn off or dismiss the sidebar content on articles.

I'd like to be able to turn off the sidebars when I chose. On your beta site, about half of the page width is devoted to things I'm not interested in, so I can't be 100% into the article I'm reading.
